Natsume kann seit seiner frühester Kindheit Yokai (Geisterwesen) sehen. Durch diese besondere Gabe ist Natsume jedoch in der Gesellschaft zu einem Außenseiter geworden, wodurch er auch den Yokai selbst eher zurückhaltend gegenübersteht. Eines Tages erbt er von seiner Großmutter Reiko das "Buch der Freunde", in dem die Namen aller Yokai verzeichnet sind, mit denen diese einen Pakt geschlossen hatte. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt wird Natsume in viele aufregende Abenteuer verwickelt, da die meisten Yokai sehr großes Interesse an diesem Buch haben und mit allen Mitteln versuchen in dessen Besitz zu gelangen.
